Woza Moya is a social enterprise established in 2002 with the primary objective of reducing poverty through craft. The Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, a holistic HIV/AIDS project started in 1991, is the organization behind the Woza Moya economic empowerment initiative.
Since its inception, the Centre has attempted to uplift the lives of those both infected and affected by HIV/AIDS through practical care. As new challenges and opportunities have presented themselves, one of the projects is Woza Moya, which assists those in desperate need to acquire a craft skill and earn an income through the sale of their craft. This puts income back into vulnerable communities at the heart of the pandemic.
Woza Moya's sole focus has been to assist men and women who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS and are in desperate need to earn an income. Since the establishment in 2002, Woza Moya has trained over 350 crafters and provides support to these crafters, most of whom are first-time income earners and have 5-10 dependants.
Woza Moya, which means "come winds of change" in isiZulu, is HACT's award-winning economic empowerment project that uplifts, empowers, and inspires local people impacted by HIV/AIDS by providing training and support to local artists and crafters. Woza Moya currently enables 350 local crafters to earn a sustainable income through the sale of their proudly South African, hand-made products, with access to a further 1500 crafters every month.
Over 95% of Woza Moya's project beneficiaries are currently women, many of whom are the breadwinners in their families. Woza Moya crafters' work is now a collectable item, and major galleries have been buying the work of Woza Moya crafters, making their products unique.
The "Woza Style" is inspired by key crafters, and Woza Moya crafters' work is now a collectable item, with major galleries buying their work. The Ndlovu Zulu Necklace, a vibrant multi-colored necklace with intricate designs, is an example of the Woza Moya style. The necklace is 21 inches in total length, made the traditional African way from the highest quality glass beads, and 100% handmade by South African artisans.
Woza Moya aims to empower and uplift people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS to become economically self-sufficient through the production of crafts within their own environment. The organization's mission is to reduce poverty through craft, and their products have gained recognition and acclaim, making them a collectible item sought after by major galleries.
